About Him

"When you visit the island of Ilhabela, Brazil, be sure to visit the Cachoeira da Toca and watch the hummingbirds for an hour or four. God's best and fastest." Text and photo © Dick Duerksen

God is the source of anything good in me. He is my Creator, my Savior and Lord, and my dearest friend. Through the storms of life, and there have been plenty, He has been there, holding my hand, giving me wisdom, peace and hope.

I have good news: He wants to do the same for you!

The word "Gospel" means "Good News." It is the good news of how you can have a loving, personal relationship with God that gives meaning and purpose to this life, and also, at the same time, gives you the certainty that you will spend eternity with Him in heaven!

Here are some special texts from the Bible to explain what this good news is and how you can make it the foundation of your life:

"For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard." Romans 3:23

"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23

"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:8

I grew up in a wonderful Christian home, but I did not realize until someone explained it to me when I was in my 20's that I can know for certain that I have eternal life now! That is because it is a free gift from God. Yes it's free, and in order to receive it, I choose to accept the gift of his death for my sins, and to exchange His new life in place of my old life. I choose to surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord as well as Savior.

Well, it is certainly not an even trade, my life for his! I hate to admit that sometimes it is hard to surrender. It's a moment-by-moment, ongoing decision. Sometimes I want to hang on to some thought, desire, feeling or action that is not in harmony with His will. But when I give it up to Him, what a wonderful feeling of peace and happiness and joy floods my heart! Contentment, fulfillment—it is all ours when we surrender to Him.

I John 5:13 says, "I have written this to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know you have eternal life." What a thrill when someone shared that text with me as a young adult, and I began to realize that I could KNOW that I have eternal life. That's because it's a gift--not something I have to earn. Thank you, Jesus, for your grace, for covering my sins with your blood, and for giving me eternal life even though I have a sinful human nature. Wow! Amazing Grace!

Nothing can separate us from God's love, not cancer, the loss of a job, or even the death of a loved one.

"Consider the Artist - and how much He loves to paint." Text and photo © Dick Duerksen

"And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,* neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38, 39)

Why don't you invite Jesus into your life now? Just say Yes to Him. Begin the new life, and let HIM begin to show you His beautiful plan for you.

11 "For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 In those days when you pray, I will listen. 13 If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me." (Jeremiah 29:11-13)
